Anecdotes on plants

Origins Native to Hong Kong, it is also distributed in southwestern and southern to southeastern China; south Asia, and southeast Asian countries, including India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Vietnam.
Meanings of name The generic name Ficus is derived from the Latin word for the edible fig, Ficus carica. The specific epithet nervosa means ‘conspicuous veins’, alluding to the prominent midvein and lateral veins abaxially.
Ecology Usually grows in forests or along pathways near streams at altitudes ranging from 400-1600m.
Application Its wood has a fine and stiff texture, making it suitable for use as timber or in steam tanks for camphor making.

Traits for identification

Growing habit Medium-sized evergreen tree.
Height To 7 m tall.
Stem Puberulous when young, shedding when mature. Bark dark brown, branchlets pubescent, wrinkled when dry.
Leaves Stipules fugacious. Leaves leathery, oblanceolate, oblong to elliptic, tawny and shiny when dry adaxially, small, scattered tubercles abaxially base obtuse or cuneate, apex short-acuminate, margin entire, with axillary glands; lateral veins 7-11 pairs, midvein and lateral veins prominent abaxially.
Flower Male, gall and female flowers mixed in one fig. Male flowers: near apex of figs; perianth-lobes 3-5; stamen 1, filament short. Gall flowers: pedicellate; perianth-lobes 3-4; ovary ovoid; style sublateral; stigma clavate. Female flowers: perianth-lobes 3-4, ovoid; style slender, terminal or sublateral, stigma elongate. Male flowers with stalk, gall flowers with stalk or sessile.
Fruit Figs yellow or reddish-brown, solitary or paired, axillary, globose or subglobose, sessile, basal bracts 3.
Flowering period March to December in Hong Kong.
Fruiting period March to December in Hong Kong.
